White Tail Deer season is finally here for the 2014-15 season. That means the leaves are changing and the weather is starting to get cold. Bow/archery season opened up Saturday, September 27, 2014. No major changes to the rules from last year. Last years changes included different bag limits, different hunting times, and a added bonus weekend of muzzleloader.
This year on the weekend of October 11-12 you will be able to use a muzzleloader. But, you will only be able to shoot antlerless white tail deer with the muzzleloader that weekend.
The bag limits this year have changed a little since last year. Now the bag limit depends on the county you are hunting in. In Geauga County, residents can shoot 3 deer total and only one can be antlered. But every county, starting this year, has a different bag limit so check online before you start hunting in a different county.
Hunting times are the same as they were last year. You are allowed to hunt ½ before sunset and ½ after sunset. This was a new rule as of last year and allows for a total of one extra hour of hunting per day.
Gun season will begin December 1, 2014 and will end December 7,2014. Youth gun weekend is November 22-23, 2014.
With High hopes that this deer season is a good one, many CHS students are ready to hit the woods and find out for themselves. Cole Schinness, a junior at CHS, says “From what I have read in my Field & Stream magazines its going to be a good season. With it only being bow season and so early in the season, I am waiting for that monster buck to shot.”
John Hasson, a Junior, said “I’ve gone out a couple times this year. I saw a buck but he never came close enough for me to get him with my bow. I have heard its supposed to get cold really quick this fall so that will help things out. I have been hunting since I was 7 and I have gotten at least 8 deer before. Over the years I have learned deer hunting takes lots of patience and hard work but definitely pays off.”
Nick Nazarini, another junior, says “I usually hunt in Munson. Last year I got a six point and I have seen a 10 point on my trail camera. Last time I went fourwheeling I saw 6 doe’s in my woods. I’m just looking forward to getting another deer this year.”
Mr Cole, a social studies teacher at CHS, said “I usually just go out for gun season and with my kids. I grew up around guns so as I got older I started to deer hunt and now I teach my kids how to. I feel that me need more deer hunters do to the fact that deer population is so high right now. Also the amount of deer and car collisions keep increasing so that tells you that the deer are invading each others territory.”
Good luck to everyone hunting this year and remember to be patient, that big one will eventually come your way.
