Finally; the London based, Dubstep/ Electronic band Modestep has released their debut album entitled Evolution Theory. Josh and Tony Friend are brothers who have been DJ-ing and mixing music since 2001. In 2010, along with Josh’s roommate Matthew Curtis to play drums and Nick Tsang to play guitar, they formed the band. The deluxe edition of the album has a total of 24 tracks including all of their singles, such as “Sunlight,” “Feel Good,” ”To the Stars,” “Show Me a Sign” and the most recent single, “Another Day.” Initially, the band had planned to release the album in 2012 on September 3. It then got extended to release on January 14, 2013, but was not. Then on February 11, 2013 it was officially released to the masses.
The album contains new songs, and they do not disappoint either. New tracks like “Freedom” and “Up” both consist of heavy and fast bass modulations while still maintaining a constantly satisfying rhythm. Other tracks, like “Time,” “Leave My Mind,” and “Saved the World” are much slower, but can pick-up tempo in a quick transition into a classic Modestep sound. Although their new music is a little different, some people, like Senior Ryan Parent felt that, “Their new stuff isn’t as good.” Among the songs named are many more that are not only new, but feature other artists such as: Foreign Beggars, Newham Generals, Koven, Popeska, D-Power, Jammin, Frisco & Jammer and Document One. Also, on the deluxe album, it features remixes by Zomboy, Smooth, M.J. Cole and Teddy Killerz. Senior Calvin Bruening thinks that Modestep’s new album is, “Really good; I wasn’t anything less than satisfied.”
This album is definitely not a post-modern masterpiece, but within the Electronic Dance Music community, this has been a long awaited release after all the hype that went along with it. Senior Max Lowther enjoys, “Listening to the deep bass drops and the electric vibe.” And first time listener, Senior Aaron Nelson agreed that, “Modestep is original and bumps so hard.” Modestep is a definitely a band that is worth giving a listen to, so next time you happen to be on the hunt for new music, just go to Modestep’s website and download the album “Evolution Theory.”
